Medical Negligence Spinal Cord Injury Claims & Spinal Surgery Negligence.
The specialist solicitors here at Lanyon Bowdler are highly experienced in dealing with medical and clinical negligence claims relating to spinal cord injuries.
The outcome of an accident, injury or infection to the spinal cord can be partial or complete paralysis, which often has a devastating effect on the patient and their family.
If the injury was a result of medical or clinical negligence, relating to sub-standard surgery or misdiagnosis, it is vital to speak to a legal specialist about how you can claim spinal injury compensation for loss of earnings and to pay for any extra medical care which may be necessary.
Financial compensation is hugely important to help the victims of spinal injuries regain their independence and improve their quality of life.

Spinal Injury – Medical Negligence Claims
The spine is made up of sections, and there are different nerves at every level. The effects of any spinal cord injury will depend on which part of the spine is damaged, whether cervical (neck), thoracic, lumbar or sacral.
- If the cervical spine is damaged this may affect the use of the hand and arm.
- If there is damage at thoracic level this may result in chest and abdominal problems.
- If the sacral nerves and lumbar are damaged, this may have an impact on the bowel and bladder.
Severe damage will usually result in all muscle power, beneath the level where the injury has occurred, being lost. If the damage is severe and at the cervical level, then legs and arms will be affected – this is known as quadriplegia.
The spinal cord cannot repair itself, so once it is damaged, any paralysis will be permanent. However, if the spinal cord has only been partially compressed by the injury and can be successfully released through surgery, there can be some recovery of function.
Spinal cord Impingement injuries can be caused by any situations where pressure is applied to the spinal cord.
Also, known as spinal cord compression, this problem can occur at any point along the spinal column and can cause a variety of health problems of varying degrees of severity. Spinal impingement can result from medical negligence and could require ongoing physical therapies and supportive care to minimise pain resulting from such an injury, or surgery may be required.
Spinal cord impingement problems can often be caused following surgery in areas close to the spine, for example where a tumour may have been removed.
If the nerves at the base of the spine are damaged, results may include loss of sensation, numbness, and pain in the legs, buttocks and pelvis, as well as incontinence. Urgent treatment is needed to avoid permanent damage, and cauda equina claims can arise if there has been a delay in diagnosing and treating this problem.
Lanyon Bowdler held a conference in 2018 at one of the countries leading orthopaedic hospitals, The Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt in Gobowen, the conference was attended by those working with people affected by spinal injury as well as patients and clients.
