GPs To Cap Appointments in Work-to-Rule Action.

GPs across England are set to limit appointments to 25 patients a day as part of a work-to-rule action prompted by the British Medical Association (BMA).

This move, supported by 98% of GP members in a ballot, aims to address concerns over funding and practice sustainability.

NHS England has warned of potential disruptions to emergency services and hospital referrals. The BMA asserts this action won't breach contracts, while Healthwatch England and the health secretary have expressed concerns over patient access and safety.

As a result of this planned action, patients may face increased wait times and reduced access to GP services due to the cap of 25 appointments per day. This could delay routine check-ups, non-urgent treatments, and potentially lead to more crowded emergency services. Vulnerable groups, such as the elderly or those with chronic conditions, might experience heightened difficulties in securing timely care. The strain on patient access could compromise early diagnosis – particularly where time is of the essence such as cancer - and treatment of health issues, and which will affect overall patient safety and health outcomes.
