Profile / Experience

Laura, a fluent Welsh speaker, attended Llanfair Caereinion High School before completing her law degree at Aberystwyth University. She then moved to London to complete her post-graduate studies, before being awarded a highly competitive training placement at a leading London law firm.

Since qualifying as a solicitor in 2017, Laura has worked on a broad range of clinical negligence claims and has secured significant settlements for her clients. She joined Lanyon Bowdler in September 2020. Whilst she spends the majority of her time working from the Shrewsbury office, Laura also works closely with her colleagues in Conwy. Laura’s native understanding of the Welsh healthcare system is of great benefit to the firm and to her clients.

Laura’s caseload primarily consists of claims arising from failures in maternity care and she is taking a leading role in the progression of maternity claims arising from the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust – the largest maternity scandal in NHS history. These cases include stillbirths, neonatal deaths, maternal deaths and birth injuries and Laura has already secured admissions of liability in a number of cases.

Laura has made a number of media appearances in relation to the scandal and the Ockenden report and had her client feature on Panorama – Maternity Scandal: Fighting for Truth. Laura took part in an ITV News interview and supported her clients who featured on BBC, Sky, ITV and Channel 5. Laura has been quoted across both paper and digital media.

Laura has also worked closely with the NHSR and Hill Dickinson, to develop and conduct an innovative pilot to deal with the large number of SaTH maternity claims in an efficient manner to ensure timely justice for families.

Clients praise her caring nature, efficiency and professionalism.

Alongside her work, Laura is a keen advocate for safer maternity care and often lends her voice to campaigns. Most recently, Laura has interviewed Kayleigh Griffiths MBE, one of the founding mothers of the SaTH maternity scandal, on a podcast in an attempt to shine a light of their call for a Four-Nation maternity inquiry.

After over 30 years of heartache and wanting justice and closure Laura Weir took on our case and won. She has become more than a solicitor I feel I could talk to her more like a caring friend that wanted closure for us and our children. I will never be able to thank her enough.
